This Mother’s Day, I’m remembering a quiet wish that shaped our entire family’s future.

In 2012, after we disposed of our ancestral family house, the search began for two apartments in Hyderabad. The idea was simple: bring my parents and our family close together in one gated community. But it was my mother’s sentiment that became the compass for the entire journey.

She didn’t ask for marble floors or a sea view. Her wish was tender and precise: “Two flats, opposite each other, on the first floor.”

To her, that was home. Proximity without intrusion. She could look across the corridor and feel her children near without losing the dignity of separate households. That single sentence set the parameters for months of searching at Executive Park. We walked through layouts, checked elevations, and rejected many “good” options because they didn’t meet her heart’s requirement.

My father, with his legal acumen, ensured the process was just as thoughtful as her wish. We drafted the sale deed ourselves to avoid anomalies and even secured pre-vetting of the documents by the government registrar—something unheard of at the time. Both properties were registered under joint names for future benefit.

What we found in the end exceeded two apartments. We discovered the architecture that supports her peace of mind.

My mother’s sentimental wish defined my father’s choice, and together, it defined our family’s next chapter. That’s the kind of quiet influence mothers carry: they don’t just raise lives, they shape the ground those lives are built on.
