Everyone tells you to light diyas on Diwali.

No one tells you how the meaning of Diwali changes as you grow, and how one diya stays with you when everything else fades.

I will tell you my story.

When I was a kid, I used to observe how crackers start blowing. As a child, my enjoyment picked on starting to light the crackers. The sound, the light, the excitement—that was Diwali for me.

As a young man, I competed with siblings, who burst more crackers. Diwali was competition. Who is louder, who is faster, and who has more?

As I entered adulthood, enthusiasm started diminishing. Work, responsibility, family, and life became bigger than crackers.

As a father, more time is spent on the safety of children than on crackers bursting. I was no longer lighting crackers. I was watching little hands, checking safety, and saying, Stand back, be careful. Diwali became protection.

As a grandfather, teaching a grandson and telling the spirit behind every activity. Now I explain why we light, why we pray, why we clean the house, and why we forgive. Diwali became teaching.

At 70 plus, even if I am not inclined to use crackers, I am just following to light a lamp irrespective of my age mounting. Such a power is present in diya light even today.

Crackers came and went. Diya stayed.

That is the lesson others don't tell you.

Diyas as symbols of hope and new beginnings, this is not just poetry. It is life. Lighting diyas during Diwali also represents hope, renewal, and fresh beginnings. The act of illuminating a lamp signifies removing obstacles and inviting prosperity into life. Families often light diyas together, sharing positive intentions for the year ahead. This simple yet powerful ritual fosters unity, reflection, and gratitude.

Here is what I learned in 70 years.

1. Crackers Are Noise. Diya Is Signal.

Noise fades in seconds. Signal stays. In life, success does not come from noise. It comes from steady signal, daily discipline, and clean work.

2. Diya Teaches Consistency.

A diya does not burst. It burns slowly, quietly, steadily. That is how a company secretary, an author, and a father succeed. One small flame, every day.

3. The Oil Is Your Character.

A diya needs oil to burn. Without oil, the wick dies in a minute. Your talent is the wick. Your character is the oil. Honesty, punctuality, clean words, and clean work. Keep the house clean. Keep your word clean.

4. Yam Deepdaan Means Protection First.

On Choti Diwali, we light Yam Deepdaan outside the door for protection and long life. Protect health before wealth. Protect family before fame. Prevention is better than cure.

5. Light One Diya for Someone Else.

Light one diya for a neighbor, for a patient, for a mother you lost. When you light for others, your own darkness goes away first.

6. Diwali Is For Enlightening The Whole Family.

Diwali celebration is for enlightening the whole family, while your gift to children becomes enriching for life long. A toy will break. A cracker will finish. A sweet will be eaten. But a good book, a good value, and a good habit will stay with a child for life. This Diwali, enlighten your family, not just your home.

7. Keep Gifting This Today Onwards To Your Well Wishers.

I have decided to keep gifting this today onwards to your well-wishers. Not just on Diwali, but every day you want to bless someone. Gift what grows. Gift what enlightens.

Lighting diyas is an enduring Diwali tradition that blends cultural, spiritual, and symbolic meanings. From historical origins in the Ramayana to modern eco-friendly practices, diyas continue to illuminate homes and hearts. These small lamps remind us that even a single flame can dispel darkness, inspire hope, and strengthen community bonds.

I started with crackers. I ended with a diya. That is growth. That is success.

This Diwali, do not just light your home. Light your habit. Light your health. Light your future. And gift light to a child.

Gold will shine for a day. A diya will shine for a night. A disciplined life will shine for a lifetime.
