November 1 - Why 8 States Share One Birthday + The Sacred Bond of Ahoi Ashtami
November 1st is not just another date on the calendar. It is a day when India celebrates its unity in diversity, and where a mother's unconditional love meets a state's cultural pride.
Why do 8 States share one birthday?
On November 1, 1956, India implemented the States Reorganisation Act. The idea was simple but powerful — organize states on the basis of language so that governance becomes closer to people. On that day, Karnataka (then Mysore State), Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh were born.
Karnataka Rajyotsava — then Mysore was renamed Karnataka in 1973 — united all Kannada-speaking regions. Kerala Piravi means 'Birth of Kerala', merging Travancore-Cochin and Malabar. Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh also trace their modern identity to this Act.
In 1966, another chapter was added. The Punjab Reorganisation Act carved out Haryana from Punjab on linguistic grounds — Haryana Day. Later, on November 1, 2000, Chhattisgarh was born. Puducherry, Delhi, Chandigarh, Lakshadweep also observe their formation day today.
One date, many identities — a masterclass in respect for language.
The Sacred Bond of Ahoi Ashtami
While states celebrate their birth, mothers across North India observe Ahoi Ashtami. Falling on Kartik Krishna Ashtami — this year on Nov 1, Saptami till 2:51 PM — mothers fast from dawn till star-sighting for their children's long life, health and happiness.
Puja muhurat is 5:35 PM to 6:54 PM IST. Mothers pray to Goddess Ahoi, draw the wall painting of Ahoi, and break the fast only after seeing the stars. It is also Kalashtami and Bhanu Saptami.
*What Etiquette Teaches Us Today*
Ahoi Ashtami teaches commitment. State Formation Day teaches identity. World Vegan Day, also on Nov 1, teaches compassionate choices.
Etiquette is the thread — respect for mother, respect for mother-tongue, respect for all living beings. That is the essence of Etiquette Essentials.
Wishing you a blessed Ahoi Ashtami, a proud Rajyotsava and a conscious World Vegan Day.
