On International Day of Yoga 2025, as a senior citizen, I find profound well-being through pranayama. With conscious breathing and light exercises, I experience immense well-being. This article presents a personal perspective on the benefits of yoga within a community setting.

The Power of Pranayama: My Daily Practice

On June 21, 2025, while we observe International Yoga Day, I am reminded of the significant difference that pranayama has made in my life. As a senior citizen, medical advice advises me to refrain from strenuous physical exercise. However, the medical advice has not prevented me from appreciating the age-old yoga practice, particularly pranayama.

I set some time for pranayama every morning during my walk. My daily practice now consists mostly of this basic but effective breathing method. Including pranayama with my morning walk helps me to feel energized and healthy all day. The effects are obvious; my body feels more balanced, and my head is clearer. I practice some gentle yoga postures before heading out for my morning walk. These workouts support my balance and flexibility.


Celebrating International Yoga Day in My Neighborhood

Today I am celebrating International Yoga Day by giving pranayama more of my time. I am happy sitting on a garden bench concentrating on my breathing exercises while my fellow residents in our gated community are engaged in collective yoga sessions. I am still somewhat active in the yoga community even if I am not doing the physical poses.

I even had the opportunity to address the enthusiastic participants by speaking a few lines. First, I started with a question: "What is the theme of 2025 Yoga Day?" I then narrated the 2025 theme: "Yoga for One Earth, One Health.โ€ It also captures the Indian idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakamโ€”the world is one. This is what we exactly saw: the residents coming together to observe this important day of yoga.

I took the opportunity to appreciate Smt. Pooja Goyal, the certified yoga instructor residing in our Hyderabad gated community, who hosts regular yoga classes. In gratitude for her organizing a community session to commemorate this 11th International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2025, I made a small contribution to show our guru dakshinaโ€”a token presentation usually given by disciples as a payback for the teachings. The audience appreciated this gesture, and I hope many will adopt this model of giving back and honoring yoga teachers.


The Global Recognition of Yoga

The United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 to honor the international appeal and advantages of yoga. Originating in India more than 5,000 years ago, this age-old habit has become a worldwide phenomenon beyond cultural and geographic barriers. Yoga has several effects on mental and physical well-being, lowers stress, and strengthens community feeling. Celebrating International Yoga Day, we are not only honoring the physical poses or breathing exercises but also the tremendous influence yoga may have on our lives.
