[MemoirBlogthon #18] The success of the JYPEX-75 philatelic exhibition led to the most important conversation of my career. A college lecturer convinced my father that my organizational skills made the Company Secretary course my true calling. This memoir details my fatherโ€™s shift from constant criticism to full support, including using his R&B workshop to help us erect a traffic board on the main road. This support proved that he recognized the value of my leadership qualities, which ultimately paved the way for my professional success.

The success of the JYPEX-75 stamps exhibition did more than just secure a verbal acknowledgment from my father; it fundamentally shifted his outlook on my path and laid the foundation for my professional career.

The PIVOT to Company Secretary

The most significant legacy of that event was an unexpected meeting. While visiting the exhibition, my father met Sri Ramakoteswara Rao, a young commerce lecturer he knew. The lecturer, who had recently passed the Company Secretary (CS) course, took the chance to advise my father: "Sir, your son is excellent in organizing and conducting any event like this. I recommend you support him taking up the Company Secretary course... I am sure it is most suitable for individuals like Suryanarayana."

This conversation, which my father disclosed to me only later, proved pivotal. My father realized that my organizational and communication skills, honed through the youth club, were my true assetโ€”an asset that made the CS course a better fit for me than traditional engineering.

Full Support and Public Works

The crucial contrast was evident in his actions. He moved from withholding pocket money to actively supporting the club using his professional influence:

1. The Traffic Board Project: Using his position as the Superintending Engineer in charge of the R&B workshop, he helped us fabricate, paint, and erect a large traffic board on the main roadโ€”all free of cost. This became one of the club's "best projects."

2. The Athletics Meet: When the club organized the State Athletics Meet, he spared the necessary vehicle to transport sports individuals and materials.

3. National Convention: Though initially reluctant, he financed my train tickets to travel to Agra for the National Convention of Indian Jaycees, where I ultimately received the National Best Jaycees Youth Club award.

The deeper ethical reason is that my father learned to recognize and foster my extracurricular skills, understanding they were not deviations but destiny. The popularity, credentials, and lessons from these youth activities proved vital in securing my first bank job and my career as a professional. This shift in perspective is what led him, years later, to proudly title me his "Five Star Company Secretary."
