[MemoirBlogthon#33] In 1979, my father began building his dream house in Vijayawada. This memoir details the application of his engineering expertise, from the Vaastu-compliant blueprints to the strategic design of four independent portions. The post captures his profound foresight: "Our house is omni-present, to live in it or let it be hired, both ways are possible." It also recounts the unexpected trust he placed in me by delegating the entire electrical wiring project, despite me not being an engineer.

The dream of owning an independent house in Vijayawada began in 1979 on plot number 32 of the Sri Kanaka Durga Officer's Cooperative Building Society. As a prime member, my father was instrumental in registering the society and meticulously planning the entire layout, ensuring spaces for common amenities like roads and parks.

Engineering with Foresight

The construction of our two-story house, though started immediately, was completed in phases due to financial constraints, with the ground floor finished by 1983 and the first floor by 1992 (partially funded by my younger brother).

What made this house unique was my fatherโ€™s engineering excellence and foresight. He personally created the blueprints, ensuring all Vaastu aspects were strictly followed. He oversaw the construction "brick by brick," ensuring the foundation, walls, and slabs adhered thoroughly to engineering specifications. The design was characterized by proper ventilation and air circulationโ€”a testament to his expertise.

His most strategic decision was the design of the structure itself: four independent portions. When I asked him the reason for this complexity, he provided a profound answer that reflected his long-term financial and familial planning:

"Presently we are on the ground floor, and the first floor's two portions were let out. If you all settle in some other cities or countries in the future, I and your mother need not have such a big space to live in. Our house is omnipresent; to live in or let it be hired, both ways are possible."

A Trust in Competency

My only direct contribution to the actual construction was the electrical work, which my father entirely delegated to me. My mother questioned the choice, as I was not an engineer. My father explained, "Suryanarayana is knowledgeable in this area, and he has been passionate about electrical works since he was a child." This delegation was a powerful validation of his trust in my innate competency, guiding me through the planning, material acquisition, and coordination with electricians.

The house, built with precision and financial foresight, was truly "omnipresent," serving as a home and an income source, prepared for the day his children would eventually migrate.
